Sue’s Biography

I reside in Chattanooga, TN, but grew up in Chicago. I first displayed an interest in the visual arts while in elementary school. Recognizing this creative potential, my parents enrolled me in weekly art classes at the Heritage Art Gallery, with the late Jack Simmerling, renowned for his depictions of historical Chicago architecture. Decades later, having married and moved to the Western NY region, I enrolled in the Fine Arts Department at the State University of New York/Buffalo, graduating with a BFA in Printmaking and subsequentlyearning an MA in Contemporary Modern Art History in 1997.

With the completion of my MA, I opened my first studio, which has provided me with years of creative challenges and accomplishment. Within the BFA program at SUNY, much of my creativity was focused on creating within the many venues of Contemporary Modernism, while entertaining, it left me feeling less challenged. Throughout my life, with every art museum visit, I’ve always been drawn to the museum galleries featuring Realism. Following several visits to Europe I independently sought out the Indirect Oil Painting Methods practiced by those masters who came before. In the 23 years painting in this method, and accompanying its share of hits and misses, I have truly found my creative voice.

My paintings have been juried into many OPA, NOAPS, AAPL and IGOR as well as other national juried exhibitions, and have been an award recipient throughout the USA. Memberships include, The Salmagundi Club, NOAPS, AAPL and IGOR. Publications include Fine Art Connoisseur, Art Collector magazine, as well as the Chicago Beverly Review.
